{"id":810,"date":"2018-01-07T17:25:16","date_gmt":"2018-01-07T17:25:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wheelsnews.com\/?p=810"},"modified":"2022-02-14T10:37:46","modified_gmt":"2022-02-14T10:37:46","slug":"news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wheelsnews.com\/index.php\/2018\/01\/07\/news\/","title":{"rendered":"The Automotive Aftermarket:  By the Numbers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What constitutes the auto industry\u2019s \u2018secondary market,\u2019 the <em>automotive aftermarket<\/em>?\u00a0 It\u2019s complex and highly competitive, and encompasses retailing, manufacturing, remanufacturing, distribution and installation. \u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-807 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/wheelsnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/th-3-1.jpg\" alt=\"th-3\" width=\"279\" height=\"182\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And it represents everything from accessories, to parts critical to performance, to chemicals and fluids necessary for a vehicle\u2019s operation.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s made and sold to equip, alter or add to an existing vehicle&#8211;<em>after<\/em> that new vehicle is delivered from the OEM (original equipment manufacturer)&#8211;is considered <em>aftermarket<\/em> (the products may or may not be manufactured by the OEM). And the infinite variety of parts, their quality and their cost can vary widely.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-809 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/wheelsnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/automotive-aftermarket-trends-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"automotive-aftermarket-trends\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wheelsnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/automotive-aftermarket-trends-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wheelsnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/automotive-aftermarket-trends-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Industry research put the global automotive aftermarket value at USD US$643.10 billion in 2016, and by some accounts that figure is estimated to rise upwards to US$1 trillion by 2022 (at a CAG&#8211;Compound Annual Growth Rate&#8211;of 4.7% for the forecasted period).\u00a0 The U.S. is the largest market for aftermarket products, with the Asia Pacific region expected to be the fastest growing market (with a CAGR of about 6.5%). Europe could evidence the highest growth of all, due to the popularity there of products which boost the performance and \u201cagility\u201d and handling features of the vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-804\" src=\"http:\/\/wheelsnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/th-5-300x166.jpg\" alt=\"th-5\" width=\"300\" height=\"166\" \/>\u00a0.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-808\" src=\"http:\/\/wheelsnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/th-4-1-300x167.jpg\" alt=\"th-4\" width=\"300\" height=\"167\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Importantly, an <strong>aging vehicle fleet<\/strong> may give the aftermarket its biggest boost.\u00a0 According to an article recently published in the <u>New York Times<\/u>, following \u201cseven straight years of growth in domestic new-vehicle sales, manufacturers have reported a decline of about 1.8% in 2017, to 17.2 million cars and light trucks.\u201d\u00a0 The consensus is that 2018 will see an even bigger drop to a sales level of about 16.8 million light vehicles this year (<em>Edmonds.com<\/em>).\u00a0 The number of older cars on the road is increasing, although \u201cdomestic auto sales remain at a historically healthy level. And worldwide sales are still on the rise.\u201d\u00a0(<em>NYT<\/em>) Indeed, some researchers estimated global light vehicle sales rising 1.5% in 2017, to 93.5 million cars and trucks.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-802\" src=\"http:\/\/wheelsnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/th-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"th-1\" width=\"143\" height=\"100\" \/>\u00a0.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-805\" src=\"http:\/\/wheelsnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/th-2-1.jpg\" alt=\"th-2\" width=\"172\" height=\"100\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Historically, aftermarket <strong>replacement wheels (rims)<\/strong> and\/or wheels\/tires sets represent about 12% of total aftermarket sales&#8211;to do-it-yourselfers, dealers, repair shops custom tuners, and increasingly, on-line purveyors.\u00a0 Who\u2019s buying aftermarket wheels?\u00a0 For the most part, young-to-middle age (around 40 years old) males, who shop for replacement wheels at new car dealers, tire stores and speed shops, and via mail order, among other sources.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-431\" src=\"http:\/\/wheelsnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/D16-bronze-metallic-matte-_2_900_-300x300.png\" alt=\"D16-bronze-metallic-matte-_2_900_-300x300\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wheelsnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/D16-bronze-metallic-matte-_2_900_-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/wheelsnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/D16-bronze-metallic-matte-_2_900_-300x300-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>\u00a0This growth of the auto aftermarket generally, and the prospects for <strong>increased sales of wheels<\/strong> in particular, indicate higher growth for sales of high-performance, lightweight forged wheels in the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe lighter they are [wheels] the better your car will ride,\u201d says (the aptly-named) Jeff Karr, author at <u>Motor Trend Magazine<\/u>.\u00a0 \u201cThe car will accelerate and stop better, too, if those big flywheels at all four corners have less rotational inertia,\u201d he adds.\u00a0 And automotive\/transportation writer Gary Medley concurs, \u201cThe simplest way to reduce unsprung weight and increase performance is by installing lighter wheels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For <strong>more information<\/strong> about choosing <strong>aftermarket wheels<\/strong> for your car visit <a href=\"https:\/\/smwwheels.com\/wheel-size-guide-choose-aftermarket-wheels\/\">https:\/\/smwwheels.com\/wheel-size-guide-choose-aftermarket-wheels\/<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What constitutes the auto industry\u2019s \u2018secondary market,\u2019 the automotive aftermarket?\u00a0 It\u2019s complex and highly competitive, and encompasses retailing, manufacturing, remanufacturing, distribution and installation. \u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":807,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.6 -
