{"id":793,"date":"2018-01-06T15:33:38","date_gmt":"2018-01-06T15:33:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wheelsnews.com\/?p=793"},"modified":"2018-01-06T15:37:22","modified_gmt":"2018-01-06T15:37:22","slug":"china-syndrome-world-ready-play-game","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wheelsnews.com\/index.php\/2018\/01\/06\/china-syndrome-world-ready-play-game\/","title":{"rendered":"The China Syndrome:  Is the World Ready to Play the Game?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Gas guzzlers.\u00a0 The phrase itself sounds antiquated, as are the cars it describes.\u00a0 Now their day has come, at least in China.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In an ongoing effort to <strong>reduce pollution<\/strong> in its biggest cities, and conforming to the government\u2019s long-standing position in support of a shift to battery- and hybrid-electric vehicle production, China has announced it is <strong>suspending the production<\/strong> of more than 500 car models that don\u2019t meet its stringent fuel economy standards.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-791\" src=\"http:\/\/wheelsnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/201801030916485587-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"201801030916485587\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wheelsnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/201801030916485587-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wheelsnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/201801030916485587-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-794\" src=\"http:\/\/wheelsnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/th-1.jpg\" alt=\"th-1\" width=\"274\" height=\"183\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-795\" src=\"http:\/\/wheelsnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/th.jpg\" alt=\"th\" width=\"284\" height=\"189\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The number includes models from both domestic carmakers and foreign joint ventures like FAW-Volkswagen and Beijing Benz and counts several models from Audi, Chevrolet, and Mercedes-Benz.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-790\" src=\"http:\/\/wheelsnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/03CLI-CHINACARS2-master675-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"03CLI-CHINACARS2-master675\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wheelsnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/03CLI-CHINACARS2-master675-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wheelsnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/03CLI-CHINACARS2-master675-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-788\" src=\"http:\/\/wheelsnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/97b2d4cd4082106b02cd40ebf789d02a-300x272.jpg\" alt=\"97b2d4cd4082106b02cd40ebf789d02a\" width=\"300\" height=\"272\" \/><\/p>\n<p>China is the <strong>world\u2019s largest automotive market<\/strong>, but without its own sources of oil to produce its own gasoline.\u00a0 So nearly all of the country\u2019s fossil fuel is imported.\u00a0 And China is on the path to be the dominant player in the EV market.\u00a0 Those factors are behind the announcement recently made by the Xinhua News Agency (New China News Agency), the official press agency of the People&#8217;s Republic of China.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-796 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/wheelsnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/electric-vehicles-2016-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"electric-vehicles-2016\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wheelsnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/electric-vehicles-2016-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wheelsnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/electric-vehicles-2016-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>China produced <strong>28 million vehicles<\/strong> in 2016, including small volumes from dozens of small-scale makers, and consolidation of the industry is also likely behind the government\u2019s decision. Michael Dunne, president of Dunne Automotive, a Hong Kong-based consultancy on China\u2019s clean car market, commented, \u201cThey\u2019re sending a signal to everybody that this is for real. . .this shows their emissions standards have teeth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe simple fact that China is the biggest market means automakers will be accommodating,\u201d said Michelle Krebs, an analyst at the AutoTrader Group.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile EV sales in the U.S grew from 158,614 units in 2016 to 173,941 through the first 11 months of 2017.\u00a0 Major manufacturers including <strong>GM,\u00a0Nissan, and\u00a0BMW<\/strong>\u00a0are launching new or upgraded EVs in 2018, and analysts say future adoption of the technology will mean more growth in the market sector, especially as the cost of EVs declines and increased battery range develops. \u00a0For example, Toyota recently said it would offer &#8220;more than 10&#8221; electric vehicles worldwide by the early 2020s.\u00a0 And some research shows Germany poised to produce about 1.3 million electric vehicles in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>According to EVvolumes.com, \u201cthe electric vehicle world sales database,\u201d volumes of plug-ins \u201cmore than tripled since 2013 and continuing on last year\u2019s growth rate of 42% would mean <strong>8 out of 10 cars sold in 2030<\/strong> would be Plug-ins.\u201d\u00a0 Some markets have already topped the 1% market share threshold: Norway had 35% plug-in share in Q2,\u00a0Iceland 9%\u00a0and Sweden around 4.5%.<\/p>\n<p>The global trend to electrics, though still relatively small, is gaining traction, and EVs should be a bigger game player in the future.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-788\" src=\"http:\/\/wheelsnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/97b2d4cd4082106b02cd40ebf789d02a-300x272.jpg\" alt=\"97b2d4cd4082106b02cd40ebf789d02a\" width=\"300\" height=\"272\" \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-798\" src=\"http:\/\/wheelsnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/th-3.jpg\" alt=\"th-3\" width=\"242\" height=\"161\" \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-797\" src=\"http:\/\/wheelsnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/th-2.jpg\" alt=\"th-2\" width=\"285\" height=\"190\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gas guzzlers.\u00a0 The phrase itself sounds antiquated, as are the cars it describes.\u00a0 Now their day has come, at least in China.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":791,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.6 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>The China Syndrome: Is the World Ready to Play the Game?
