Wikipedia describes the internet\u2013related services and products firm as \u201cthe largest search engine\u201d in that country, with \u201cabout 65% market share,\u201d and says Yandex ranked as the 4th largest search engine worldwide, as of 2012.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-465\" src=\"http:\/\/wheelsnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/104181597-GettyImages-605519688.530x298-300x298.jpg\" alt=\"104181597-GettyImages-605519688.530x298\" width=\"300\" height=\"298\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wheelsnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/104181597-GettyImages-605519688.530x298-300x298.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wheelsnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/104181597-GettyImages-605519688.530x298-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>\u00a0 \u00a0<em>\u00a0<strong>&#8220;This<\/strong> <strong>technology is driving big changes&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So why is Yandex getting into the <strong>autonomous driving<\/strong> pool? \u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-474 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/wheelsnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/230px-Hands-free_Driving.jpg\" alt=\"230px-Hands-free_Driving\" width=\"230\" height=\"165\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And why are so many other worldwide tech firms, carmakers, components suppliers and ride-sharing companies investing billions of dollars into developing self-driving cars and trucks? \u00a0The answer could be the predicted $7 trillion value of the global \u201cpassenger economy\u201d by 2050.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Yandex.Taxi is already a very much in-demand, on-demand service in Russia. \u00a0Just a hint at the numbers (again, from Wikipedia): \u00a0Operating in Moscow and other cities across Russia, the company is used by approximately 200 Russian taxi companies, operating around 20,000 cabs. \u00a0Yandex processed 3.5 million orders in 2013.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strategy Analytics, a <strong>research<\/strong> and consulting firm, and tech giant Intel see figures like these as a <strong>huge market<\/strong> already in development.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The com<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">panies\u2019 <strong>joint study<\/strong> explores the economic potential of the Intel-named <strong>\u201cPassenger Economy,\u201d<\/strong> one in which today\u2019s drivers become passengers, an economy that the study predicts will grow from $800 billion in 2035 to <strong>$7 trillion by 2050<\/strong>. \u00a0The spark that may ignite the global &#8220;passenger economy&#8221; will be the marketing of the first fully autonomous-drive vehicles in the next four to five years. \u00a0(A \u201cfully autonomous vehicle\u201d must be able to navigate without human intervention, to a predetermined destination, over roads not adapted for its use.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;This <strong>technology is driving big changes<\/strong>,&#8221; said Kathy Winter, Vice President and General Manager of Intel&#8217;s Automated Driving Group. &#8220;Time will be freed up by people <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> driving. \u00a0There will be increased productivity and new goods and services to be consumed.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Autonomous mobility means more than sit-back-and-relax-hands-free driving. \u00a0The phenomenon&#8211;likened to the space race of the 1960s and the explosion of technology-driven, and other life-changing aspects of our lives that it spawned&#8211;is poised to alter our patterns and perspectives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Example: \u00a0Intel estimates widespread adoption of driverless vehicles could <strong>save at least 585,000<\/strong> lives between 2035 and 2050.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Example: \u00a0Autonomous technology will reinvent the delivery of products, locally and long haul. \u00a0The shift could make up for driver shortages and account for much of the projected revenues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Example: The new technology could reduce accident-related public safety costs markedly, by some $234 billion over the period 2035-2045.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dmitry Polishchuk, head of Yandex.Taxi, says, &#8220;Self-driving cars are set to <strong>revolutionize the\u00a0way we commute<\/strong> within a matter of a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decade. . .there are dozens of companies around the world building their own driverless cars, but only a few of them have components crucial\u00a0<\/span>for turning this project into reality.&#8221;
